FINALLY… I never thought it was possible for me to be sick of New Moon, but I guess there is such a thing as too much hype can kill you.
Of course, what can I expect from a movie based on a book? To turn hundreds of pages into mere two hours will require shortcuts whether for the good or bad. I always come into a movie that is based on something I’ve read with the intention of paying my dues. Well okay, in this particular case I have another motivation: to see Taylor Lautner. But I’m not disappointed there, thankfully. And not just because of the shallow reason that he’s a buff, but also I think his acting was the best out of the three leading stars. You can see the different emotions he’s portraying, the changes, and you feel for his broken heart.
Whereas Rob, fine-looking as you are, you act like you have a stomach pain, the way you kept squinting your eyes. And Kristen, have you got something stuck in your teeth? Because you sounded as if you could never finish your sentences. They just sort of floated … all comma and no end. It’s weird. It’s not how people talk in real life. I can’t tell whether you’re happy or complicated or upset - you sounded all the same to me.
I enjoyed listening to Jacob’s friend Embry talk much more - he sounded effortless enough for a first-timer.
I love love love the Volturi. They all did great. They’re evil, scary and just plain awesome. Without needing to say anything, Dakota Fanning and his brother successfully made you didn’t want to mess with them.
After paying my dues, this movie made me like Jacob at the same time hate Bella even more. He’s like your friend whom you don’t want to see saddened. And Bella is the evil girl who leads him on. You don’t understand why he keeps pining for her when she makes her stance clear by flying off to see his ex in a second. And she is so miserable all the time! Ugh. While Edward well, he’s just an innocent bystander here.
Individual actors aside, I like this second installment better than Twilight though. I think Chris Weitz did a better job than Catherine Hardwick in bringing the story to life. Both the story and the movie itself is enjoyable to watch. I get it that the first one was about the equally serious and melancholic pairing of Edward and Bella, but why did it have to have a blue overtone? After the warmth of New Moon, looking back Twilight looked like an old 80s movie. Meanwhile, New Moon is friendly and warm. All the main characters had at least a chance to say something (unlike in Twilight where I can’t recall Emmett or Jasper talking) and it has a good pace with great actions and special effects.
The other day I overheard someone say New Moon is good, but not good enough to watch a second time. Unlike Twilight, she said where she apparently saw more than once. Well I beg to differ. From the first time I saw it, I was certain I didn’t want to pay to see Twilight again. But I’d be willing to go see New Moon another time for the simple pleasantness it emits.
